Program Description:
The Graphic Communications Technology curriculum prepares students for employment in the printing and publishing field. The program qualifies graduates to seek employment as offset press operators, on-demand publishing system operators, screen printers, small business operators and electronic prepress production employees.

Instruction is offered in all phases of the Graphic Communications technology with emphasis placed on the operations of large and small offset presses, computer skills needed for the electronic prepress, technical skills required for the on-demand system operators and screen printing techniques required for employment and small business operation.

The Graphic Communications Technology programs offers 3 certificates of achievement and 4 fast-track certificates of completion. The Pasadena City College program is affiliated with major printing industry corporations and university level Graphic Communications programs.

A Certificate of Achievement is awarded upon completion of all required courses with a grade of C or better.

The curriculum prepares students to seek employment in the offset press operation segment of the Graphic Communications industry. Job opportunities include, small offset press operator, floor-helper and as feeders for large offset press.

Instruction is given on a single and two-color of offset press equipment producing single through four-color process work. The training also includes skill development on platemaking, ink and paper considerations, and bindery operations. Students in this area of the Graphic Communication program also train for careers in the on-demand segment of the printing industry. Classes are available to learn the operation of high-speed digital publishing systems and skills required for employment in this fast growing area.

Program Outcomes:

The following program outcomes are units of knowledge which are to be accomplished throughout completion of the program:

1. Demonstrate the academic skills and have abilities to enter a career in Graphic Communications Technology with a foundation in the certificate area of their choice: Screen Printing or Digital Composition and Imaging or both.

2. Demonstrate critical thinking skills necessary to problem-solve situations and challenges and recognize the need for lifelong learning in the field of Graphic Communications Technology.

3. Demonstrate knowledge of the ethical and social responsibilities, understand and apply safe working procedures to a career in Graphic Communications Technology.

4. Demonstrate the value of teamwork in the field of Graphic Communications Technology.

5. Demonstrate an understanding of the career paths available in Screen Printing, Electronic Prepress and Digital Imaging professions.

6. Demonstrate mastery of the manipulation of technical aspects; be literate in the current terminology used in the area of choice and produce quality graphic communications products using the education training and hands-on skills acquired at Pasadena City College.
