Program Description:
The Graphic Communications Technology curriculum prepares students for employment in the printing and publishing field. The program qualifies graduates to seek employment oon-demand publishing system operators, screen printers, small business operators and electronic prepress production employees.
Instruction is offered in all phases of the Graphic Communications technology with emphasis placed on computer skills needed for the electronic prepress, technical skills required for the on-demand system operators and screen printing techniques required for employment and small business operation.
The Graphic Communications Technology programs offers 3 certificates of achievement and 4 fast-track certificates of completion. The Pasadena City College program is affiliated with major printing industry corporations and university level Graphic Communications programs.
The curriculum prepares students in three primary areas: entry-to mid-level employment in screen printing industry; self-employment in screen printing; and updating or expansion of skills already attained in the area of screen printing. Employment opportunities may be found in local screen printing companies, sign and T-shirt shops or with larger commercial screen printing firms in the Los Angeles area. Entry-level positions include racking, screen cleaning, ink mixing and screen prep. More advanced students may perform camera or computer work, burn screens, and print small runs or assist with printing of larger production runs.
Instruction is offered in a variety of areas related to screen printing: safety issues, physical requirements, job planning, manual and computer-generated stencil preparation and techniques required to print using the screen printing process.
Emphasis is on accurate registration of multiple colors and techniques for correct application of ink to the printed substrate. Instruction includes the use of the process camera, Macintosh computer and software applications, plate exposure and contacting frames, semi-automatic press and rotary T-shirt press operation and the uses of flash and belt dryers.
A Certificate of Achievement is awarded upon completion of all required courses with a grade of C or better.
